Robert J. Kirmelewicz started his law enforcement career at the Rowley Police Department in 1985. In 1986 he attended the 29th Municipal Police Officers Class at the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Council Police Academy in Topsfield. In 1989 he transferred to the Groveland Police Department as the Highway Safety Officer. After assuming many different assignments over the years, including the training of other police officers; he was promoted to sergeant in 2002. As sergeant he was responsible for many administrative duties within the police department, including: firearms licensing, background investigations, scheduling and patrol supervision. In 2008 he was promoted to chief of police and assumed command of the department. The chief holds the following Criminal Justice Degrees: Associate of Science Degree from Northern Essex Community College, Bachelor of Science Degree from Springfield College, and Master of Science Degree from Western New England College. Deputy Chief Jeffrey T. Gillen has served the residents of Groveland with the police department since 1990. He has served in many capacities within the department including becoming the department's first Detective, Corporal and served as Sergeant for several years until being promoted to Deputy Chief of Police. For many years, Deputy Gillen has been instrumental as the department's lead investigator in several serious criminal cases in Groveland with the successful prosecution of many offenders. Today, he is the department's Executive Officer and is responsible for all administrative operations of the police department including the critical recruitment and selection process as well as continuing to supervise all criminal investigations and prosecutions. Deputy Gillen's perseverance and strong leadership skills led to the Groveland Police Department becoming one of the first police departments in the area to be awarded Certification status with the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission. He is a certified assessor for the MPAC and has been a "Team Leader" for several police department assessments. Deputy Gillen earned a Bachelor's Degree from Springfield College and a Master's Degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Western New England College. He has also obtained professional development training from the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association and the Massachusetts Police Leadership Institute. Sgt. Dwight McDonald (e-mail)
Sgt. McDonald has served with the Groveland Police Department since July of 1989 after being with the Boxford Police Department for 2 years. He was first assigned to the midnight shift and was Groveland’s DARE Officer for many years. He continues to be the department’s juvenile and school liaison officer as well as a member of the Community Collaborative Initiative (CCI) run by the Essex County District Attorney's office. Promoted to Sergeant in 2008, his duties include supervising the Communications Department, FTO (Field Training Officer) supervisor, I.T. specialist and the LEAPS/CJIS rep. He is also the Firearms Licensing Official for the department and coordinates the on-line in-service training programs for all employees. He has obtained professional development training from the New England Institute of Law Enforcement Management and the Massachusetts Police Institute in leadership functions and critical incident management. Off. Gorski is the police department's evidence control officer and the use of force/defensive tactics instructor. He has worked as a court officer and at the Essex County Sheriff's Dept. He started working in Groveland April 1997. He holds an associate’s degree in C.J. from Hesser College and a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice from Western New England College. Detective Morton has been with the department since December of 1996. He has an Associate’s Degree in CJ from North Shore Community College and is pursuing his Bachelors degree, and has attended the reserve police academy. He graduated from the Full Time Police Academy in 2003 and is currently assigned as the police department’s detective working an evening/day jump shift.
Off. Ryan was one of the Department's full time dispatchers and graduated from the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Council Reading Police Academy in February 2008. He is a use of force/defensive tactics instructor and is in charge of the department’s BT (Breathalizer) machine He serves in the United States Marine Corps Reserve and is currently assigned to an evening/midnight jump shift.
Off. Traister works as a patrol officer and is assigned to the midnight shift. He graduated from Northeastern University in 2008 with a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice. He Graduated from the Full-Time police academy in Boylston on Nov. 21, 2008 and was appointed full-time for the Town of Groveland on Nov. 24, 2008. Off. Steven Petrone (e-mail) Off. Petrone was appointed to the Groveland Police Department in January of 2009 as a reserve officer and successfully attended the Full-Time Police Academy in New Braintree. He was appointed a Full-Time Police Officer on Dec 20, 2010. He holds a Bachelors Degree in Sociology from the University of Massachusetts and came highly recommended from the Essex County DAs Office. Off. Heather Riley (e-mail) Officer Riley was appointed in August of 2009 as a reserve police officer and was appointed on September 12, 2011 to a full time position.
Officer Shanahan has been with the department since October 1989. He has attended the reserve police academy and has been an EMT for 22 years. He owned/operated Shanahan's Ambulance until it was bought out in 1996. He is currently employed by the Georgetown Highway Department. Off. Stephen Sargent (e-mail) Officer Sargent serves both as a dispatcher and a police officer. He is the Emergency Management Director for the Town of Groveland and a member of the Fire department.
Officer Fournier serves both as a dispatcher and patrol officer and was appointed in March of 2004 He is one of the department’s firearms training officers and runs a State of Massachusetts approved training course for new LTC and FID applicants . He served over 25 years as an EMT and is currently certified as an instructor in firearms and motor vehicle stops. Off. Daniel Ramirez (e-mail) Off. Ramirez was appointed to the Groveland Police Department in March of 2007. He currently works full time for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a Court Officer, assigned to the Lawrence District Court.

The position of dispatcher in the communications department has many responsibilities. The dispatcher receives all communications from the public and other agencies. Once received, the dispatcher immediately informs the patrol officers of any emergencies or service calls, or refers the information to the appropriate person or agency. In addition to this function, a dispatcher is also required to know how to use all communication equipment, including computers, radios, the 911 system, office equipment and phone systems. This is a demanding job at times and requires a calm, patient and intelligent person.
