Your Safety - It's Worth a Second Thought
Be a Safe Pedestrian - Use the Crosswalk
86% of pedestrians killed by cars each year were not in a crosswalk. Cross the street safely.
- Stop at the curb-look left, then right, then left again.
- Continue looking for traffic as you cross the street.
- Don't walk out in front of cars assuming drivers will stop for you. Remember, vehicles may turn left, right, or right on red, even when the signal you see says "WALK". Continue to look left and right as you are crossing the street, making eye contact with drivers.
Make your walk a safe one :
- Always walk on the sidewalk.
- If there is no sidewalk, walk on the left side of the road, facing traffic.
- Never walk along or try to cross highways where pedestrians are prohibited.
- Stay alert for cars pulling out of driveways and side streets.
- Pay attention - if you are distracted, you may not see or hear a car coming.
- When walking or jogging at night, wear a reflective vest or reflective stripes. Carry a small flashlight.
Did you know? :
- The most common cause of pedestrian injury is pedestrian error, not driver error.
- 50% of pedestrian fatalites involve the elderly.
- One-third of pedestrians killed each year are intoxicated. If you've had too much to drink, take a cab or ride with a designated driver.
Street smarts for kids - Children ages 5-14 have the highest rate of pedestrian injuries
- Teach kids to stop at the curb and look left-right-left before crossing.
- Show them how to use crosswalks and pedestrian signals.
- Explain that even if they see a car coming, the driver may not see them.
- If your child walks to school, walk the route together to review safe walking habits.
